So a new mexican joint opened near me and is pretty cheap and not absolutely terrible for my diet, unlike pizza, lol. I got steak fajitas tonight and wow so good! This place is mostly street food staples like fajitas I mentioned, tacos, nachos, burritos, etc.
Literally the one good thing about the usa is the immigrant heritage of all these great dishes.
i dunno if it’s tex-mex, i think it’s western mex. but if a menu has a dish with birria, i get it. or any of the portmanteaus like quesabirria.
They have that!
quesabirria
I’m a huge fan.
Idk if this is really Tex Mex but a good taco al pastor is in its own league. Elote is the food of gods.
Chips and guacamole
This is really my answer as well.
Chips and Guac, Chips and Queso are really my go toos.
Migas for breakfast. Tamales for everything else.
Enchiladas verdes
pozole (or any soup) if they have it during winter
I’m always a sucker for a nice chimichanga
mm that sounds good too
If they have them, try a torta ahogada
it’s a nice sandwich, but then they dunk it in a delicious red sauce
nothing better when you need a pick-me-up
Don’t have it but they do have chimichangas which I will for sure try for next time!
I had Flaming Hot Esquites once and was transported to flavor town

Idk if it’s texmex or what, but most of the taquerias near me sell Tortas, which are basically just some of the most bomb sandwiches I’ve had. They’ll usually have a slab of queso fresco, some refried beabs, protein, letuce, tomatoes or pico, sour cream/mayo, and peppers all served on a sliced roll.
Any time I can get a California Burrito (Cal-mex?), I’ll go for it.
Elote (more of a traditional Mexican street food) is also pretty great.
Alambre is like a pile of grilled peppers, onion, melted cheese and protein that you grab at with tortillas. It’s a great dish to share.
