My opinion of Grey has soured over the last few years but I’m not sure I can articulate exactly why. I suspect it might just be myself changing over time but I’ve also heard they just started reuploading old vids to manipulate the algorithm.
The old videos are still good but I find myself scrutinizing of their points, thinking their integrity is compromised.
Hes not reuploading them, hes doing the YT meta of changing thumbnails and titles every now and then to get them back into the algorithim.
You aren’t alone on souring on him, that seems to be a growing sentiment. His upload schedule is dog shit, yeah Hbomberguy uploads a video a year lately, but his videos are 4 hours long. CGPgrey used to upload 3 videos a year that are a combined 30 minutes, half his new videos are members only, half of his older videos are now behind a paywall too, his last video on patreon is an “early release” that is still behind a paywall. He just dropped hello internet with no notice and cortex with a “hiatus”. He’s not making anything new but he’s still running a patreon which was originally “only charging on video release to keep him honest” but is now a monthly subscription. He’s also been open about his favorite goodbye is the “Irish goodbye” so I think he’s just done now.
Huh, I hadn’t realized, but that explanation does a lot to explain why I haven’t enjoyed his videos as much these last few years as I used to.
I mean, personally I kinda think some of his newer videos are kinda crap anyway. I know its subjective, but like he has 3 videos on rock paper scissors, “I will beat you at rock paper scissors”, “The rock paper scissors game explained”, and the one behind a paywall “How obsidian helped make rock paper scissors”. The free ones are a combined 4 and a half minutes and the paywalled video is 80 minutes. Also while many of his older videos that used to be free are now paywalled, some I swear just do not exist anymore.
Yeah, dropped him from my patreon because it seemed like there was not going to be any more content or a discussion about it. I’ve had other creators that go dormant for one reason or another, but they generally share updates.
“Selectorate theory” is a legitimately a very interesting theory in political science and I would recommend reading about it to anyone who finds this video or the book “the dictators handbook”, which the video is based on, compelling.
