First: short of nuclear weapons, Russia kind of too insignificant to be a threat to NATO. NATO’s military budget is scheduled to be several times more than Russia’s entire purchasing power adjusted GDP. Putin is correct that it’s a pretext.
Second, the US is definitely slipping towards fascism, with the UK not far behind and many other European countries at risk.
NATO’s military buildup isn’t for Russia. The significance of a mass rollout of autonomous and semi-autonomous weaponry in the hands of the Trump administration should be obvious.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown Europe that it needs more of everything. The idea that we can win a small highly equipped highly trained force has gone out the window. And that costs money.
And yes, we’ve also seen the US shift from steadfast ally to unreliable to outright geopolitical opponent.
But don’t assume that just because Russia couldn’t occupy Warsaw that they can’t, for example, kill several hundred thousand Estonians. Russia is immediately turning genocidal in its occupied territories, and while they’re not a risk to Europe as a whole, they are absolutely dangerous.
