IMO an older used Android phone in airplane mode makes a great MP3 player. Lots of options for like $30-50 on eBay and a lot of them will have headphone jacks and microSD card slots.

This is the conclusion I came to after looking to buy a simple mp3 player to play binaural beats through earbuds when I sleep at night. An old cell phone has super long battery life if you put it on airplane mode and play mp3s, and has tons of storage space. Honestly, an old cell phone blows away any reasonably priced mp3 player.
