In Finland in the 90s you couldn’t even buy garlic. My old Finnish Grandpa would get totally red in the face from eating burger king because it would have a tiny amount of black pepper. It’s better nowadays though

World News@quokk.au•Iran’s new leadership is younger, savvier, ruthless and even more hard-line
8·14 days agoHonestly doesn’t surprise me at all. Lots of the Iranian population hate the regime. What would it then take for someone to voluntarily work for the regime, at the leadership level no less! There’s no average Joe’s getting in there, that’s for sure.
If a certain space gains a reputation for being a bit extreme. Then no one not extreme would want to join. Everyone joining would then be the ones who actually agree with the reputation this kind of extreme organisation has. After a while it would be filled with these actually extreme people and it will turn even worse.

World News@quokk.au•EU-approved pesticide found to have potential effects on brain development
6·16 days agoHey. I’m actually involved with two of the products that contain this compound. These have been under fire last year because the same compound degrades into a kind of pfas and have already been banned in a few EU countries. A process to ban it EU wide was already started even before this brain development news. It’s very likely that by 2028 this will be banned EU wide but it’s probable it may be even sooner than that. If any of you want to know it’s a compound that’s used effectively to counteract late blight in potatoes, a disease that can totally devastate the entire crop in a weeks time. Without anything to combat late blight potatoes cultivation in the EU would stall to a halt with severe shortages as organic potatoes are impossible to grow in some locations. However right now we have a couple alternatives left, so so far so good. I’m in favor of banning fluazinam.

World News@quokk.au•EU-approved pesticide found to have potential effects on brain development
5·16 days agoMultiple companies produce products which contain this compound. Just from the two I know it’s both a US company based in Pennsylvania and a Swiss company based in Basel.
I could also add that in the US they have GMO potatoes that are immune to late blight and would therefore not need any fungicides. We don’t have those GMO potatoes available in the EU.

I have seen cows with holes like that in their rumen in real life. They have a little access point on the outside where you can just put your arm into their rumen from the outside and take a sample. It’s both insane and also kind of cool. It’s called a port hole. Used in feed science. And apparently the cow doesn’t care.
