  • The problem with the “laugh then ignore” philosophy is that many who are attracted to power do so to abuse that power.

As such, I keep running into moderators of leftist spaces on Lemmy who smack me for calling out abuses of the CCP, USSR, and DPRK. Specifically, lemmy.world/c/latestagecapitalism, lemmy.ml/c/memes, and one other that I can’t remember and can’t find because they deleted all of my comments on their community.

When you have seas of downvotes and bad faith arguments combined with moderators brutally cracking down on dissent, it makes leftists look ridiculous to most. I (and apparently OP) are then frustrated enough to be compelled to spread the word that not every socialist is engaging in good faith. I don’t know if that’s more damaging to socialism than what they do or not, but it’s the truth.

    TL;DR: Echo chambers suck.

Purity testing is worth criticizing, even if it is arguably “purity testing” to do so. Your meme resonated with me because I keep stepping on rakes in socialist spaces for being not quite socialist enough - generally, because I criticize objectively wrong/stupid things socialists do, not because they’re socialist but because they’re objectively wrong/stupid for doing the thing. In other words, I don’t pull punches just because someone is a socialist, so I’m purity tested and removed. One less ally. One less piece of constructive criticism. Brilliant.

Objecting to “purity tests” like yours reminds me of the Paradox of Tolerance; intolerance is generally bad, but if you tolerate intolerant people, your tolerant society will become intolerant. As a consequence, you must be intolerant towards the intolerant.

TL;DR: Yes, we should “purity test” purity testers, because they are actively harmful in that they make socialists look like catty idiots.

  • I did click around that exact page a week or so ago when someone was suggesting people leave Lemmy for Piefed, but similarly, I didn’t see much that I was missing on Lemmy.

So far my only gripe with Lemmy has been that I keep stubbing my toes on not supporting communism/the CCP hard enough for the tastes of some communities’ moderators. In their defense, one of them explains in their sidebar that the whole point of their community is to be propaganda for communism, but I never noticed it while browsing the front page. Ostensibly, that’s on me, so the 3-day I caught was deserved.

My only gripe with hopping over to have at Piefed would be the mild hassle involved, so I’ll probably get around to it eventually.
