If Ukraine was actually part of NATO, Russia would have to immediately back off because that would add the nuclear deterrent Ukraine needs to stop the invasion, because NATO is a nuclear alliance. If any one country is attacked, all the other countries would retaliate. That is why Zelenskyy wanted Ukraine to be part of NATO and why he said that if Ukraine were to be allowed to join he would resign as president immediately. However they are continually rebuffed because seven nations, including the United States and Germany, are blocking their accession to NATO.
