So, Hexbear.net’s users told me to promote my stuff in their instance—only for mods to ban me soon after for spam, just for crossposting posts from [email protected] including links to my socials. No rule against it, of course, but why let something like rules get in the way of a good old-fashioned power trip?

This is the kind of hypocrisy that doesn’t just rot communities—it rots movements. The same people who’ll lecture you about “solidarity” and “anti-authoritarianism” will turn around and run their little fiefdom like a tinpot dictatorship the second they get the chance. This is the kind of behavior that doesn’t just stay online. Give these people real power, and suddenly you’re looking at a Pinochet-style regime: dissenters disappeared, criticism crushed, and all of it wrapped in the hypocrisy of calling themselves “leftists.” If this is what their version of leftism looks like, I’d hate to see their idea of authoritarianism.

Funny how the loudest voices for “freedom” and “equality” are the first to slam the door shut when someone steps slightly out of line. But I guess that’s the Hexbear way—rules for thee, not for me.

So here’s to Hexbear.net: proof that the only thing more predictable than a mod abusing power is a “leftist” mod who thinks they’re the exception to their own principles.

I wanted to block all of Hexbear when I was new to Lemmy. I just didn’t know how.

I don’t love Hexbear, but I’ve learned to tolerate them. They are on a whole other level over there, and I couldn’t be a Hexbear user, but for the most part, they’re cool. They’re just a little wild. Kind of like us (dbzer0 users), but in a different way. I’m glad I didn’t block their instance.

Just… don’t poke the bear. Because that is one bomb-ass bear. (I got mocked once for not understanding the context behind that joke of theirs. I don’t care. I like bears in general, so I’ll use it my own way. They wanna explain it, I’ll listen; otherwise I’ll just keep on keepin’ on as the old song said.)

You need to learn what authoritarian means. Trying to block spam from a community isn’t part of the definition.

i’m not a mod or admin but if you want to promote yourself somewhere that isn’t a bulletin board specifically for promotion, you should participate in non-promotional ways first and continuously.

Bro this is embarrassing. Also if you think a shitposting and social site is any indication of a “movement” you really need to get out more and not take the internet so seriously when it comes to incredibly niche forums only maybe a couple thousand people know about.

Also since you mentioned Pinochet, guess who he was disappearing?

Mostly Marxist Leninists who you lump together with people like him. No investigation no right to speak.

Just looking at the mod log you only have one post? Unless it was all purged, which I think is typical when removing spam.

I would say there is a difference between “actively participating in a community and sharing links to what I’m working on” vs “only posting links to my socials”. The former is fine. The latter makes you look like a spammer.

If you want to actually participate in the community I’m sure if you message the admins they’ll restore your account. If all you want to do is drive traffic to your stream, well, sounds like spam to me. I will say that although it should be obvious, we apparently don’t explicitly have rules against spam, which is weird. I’ll bring that up to the admins. We used to but the rules were overhauled to be simpler / more clear somewhat recently and I suspect since “don’t spam” should be obvious it was removed

Tankies on Hexbear and Lemmygrad give a bad name to the rest of the leftists on here in the minds of potential refugees from Reddit.

There’s nothing wrong with democratic socialism, and I can at least respect a communist who is consistent in showing equal disdain for Russian or Chinese imperialism as they would western imperialism. However, support for dictatorial regimes like Russia or China instead of democracies like Ukraine or Taiwan is far more common than it should be on this platform.

Anyone calling China a dictatorship or that puts it on the same level as Russia is either intentionally misinformed or being paid to promote misinformation.

          Which is it for you?

Like anyone who calls people “tankie” actually makes that distinction unless they’re called on it.

“To place Russian communism on the same moral level with Nazi fascism, because both are totalitarian, is, at best, superficial, in the worse case it is fascism. He who insists on this equality may be a democrat; in truth and in his heart, he is already a fascist, and will surely fight fascism with insincerity and appearance, but with complete hatred only communism.”

Tankies aren’t true communists in any case; taking anti-west foreign policy positions just to be anti-west is hypocritical when the anti-west regimes are not only not communist themselves, but in cases such as Russia, actively fascist.

I wouldn’t go that far—I agree with most of their takes, but if their actions aren’t congruent, it’s all just empty words. A community that preaches anti-authoritarianism but bans people for petty reasons is just a joke.
