That is some genuinely impressive British brainworms.
Damn. I’m sad to hear this show has so many issues. I saw a clip where I assume the title comes from, where two guys are chatting, and the one says he has to be careful these days, on tip toes. I really thought it was a powerful scene. To hear that TERF island has managed to TERF this up is unsurprising, but still disappointing.
imo the trailer is doing all the usual stereotypes so that queer existence can be framed as a debate where both sides “go too far” and there’s a “happy medium” to be found. reactionary filth https://www.imdb.com/title/tt35768911/
It absolutely tries to do a thing about the “excesses” of the gays, although I will say that the thesis is not that these things are wrong, but that they will provoke the bigots and that could have negative consequences. A sort of reverse pride. Shame?
Either way, whenever a character is shown to be against LGBTQ people for such excesses, they are wrong in the story (Well, except for the TERF, she just gets to say shit). The main character for instance makes a remark about trans people being what draws bigot’s attention, and is immediately shut down for it and later makes a speech to a bigot defending both self ID and being trans/gender noncomforming.
When Russell T Davies said “Some of my best friends are gender critical” during an interview, any chance of this being decent was lost. Not that I had any hope in a TERF island production.

I would like to amend my previous post and instead throw a milkshake at Russel T. Davies.
Hven’t seen Tip Toe, but idk if it’s a genuinely British thing, it may just be boomer brainworms at play here. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t like doing generation wars, i absolutely stand with older queers who’ve weathered the mishandling of the AIDS pandemic, fought against Section 28 or §175 etc., i value their lasting contributions to queer organizing that i benefit from myself all the time BUT with all that said, even the most admirable activists from the 20th century who understand that we cannot win by kowtowing to the straights and playing the respectability politics game are products of their time and will fail to grasp the full extend of the brainworms that the co-opted pick mes in gay and lesbian spaces have.
When i see the trifecta of transphobia, no kink at pride and homonationalism, i know that’s a person who will side with our enemy until their night of long knives comes. And that applies all over the imperial core, not just in the UK. They will not see how wrong they are until they get Ernst Röhmed between the ribs. And being too mild and naive in the judgement of that likewise applies to older queers all over the imperial core. When decent, well-meaning people who were friends with the respectability squad before they suckered up to JKR and Trump look at these losers they used to hang out with, they have rose-tinted glasses on and lie to themselves that the TERFs or the log cabin republican or the revisionist grifter will come around when the leopard starts nibbling at their face. They won’t, and i don’t know how to tell this to somebody who’s in the same boat as Russel T. Davies.
The show is actually about backlash to gender and sexual minorities. The main character is the subject of a hate crime (That’s not a spoiler, that’s shown in the first 10 seconds of the show) and the show is the lead up to that, as we see what leads up to that hate crime. And the thing is, through this we see a lot of criticism of respectability politics. The main character consistently pursues respectability politics in his dealings with bigots, he makes remarks about how modern queers are too out there, and he is shown to be in the wrong for doing so, and when he says that as an older gay man he’s “Paid his dues” and he can just be normal now, he is mocked to his face and told that his very existence as an out gay man is inherently political.
But it is also very obviously written by an older successful cis gay man, and brings with it the associated brainworms.
Well said
the freedom of information act has been giving me a lesson on brainworms; some of them are the dominant ideology of this world.
Never heard of this show but with a cursory Google, I’ve seen nothing but good reviews.
But if that’s true, that sounds like a really dumb show.
