Shaun Evans maintains it was an ‘involuntary, subconscious twitch’ that led to an ‘OK’ symbol during the official broadcast of Germany’s opening game against Curaçao on Sunday

i thought there was a chance it was a normal OK gesture, but then I saw the picture

IDK, this could just be a nothing burger.

The whole calling 👌 a Nazi symbol because of one photo of Nazis using the symbol was kinda counterproductive to begin with.

    • I do really hate at a conceptual level ceding basic portions of speech or communication symbols (i.e. a hand gesture with an already established meaning) to racist dipshits just because they were used by racist dipshits

I was thinking about this a lot a few weeks ago because of the 88 =HH shit, like, how long is that going to stay in our society? If people are still around making usernames in 100 years are people born in 2088 still going to get disgost looks for an 88 in the username? It just seems really weird and fucked up to me somehow

I remember having to tell my sibling not to put 88 at the end of their Minecraft username.

Yeah it sucks. Not sure what to do about it when with codes that are actually established. But falling for the bait and doing the Nazis work of handing them more codes is avoidable.

I really resent them taking the OK sign. Years ago my dad told me how the thumbs up is equivalent to giving someone the finger in certain Middle Eastern cultures and that the OK sign is a safer option. To this day I think of it as a minor gesture of cultural sensitivity.

The “gotcha” or “circle game” sees somebody show an upside-down OK sign below their waist, with anybody seen looking at it punched in the shoulder.

We’re living in weird-ass times, because this is what I immediately thought of, but who fucking knows. Everything is suss now. White supremacist assholes ruin everything. The 4chan folks do seem to be more about holding it up while the circle game is about putting it low and making people look at it. I’d give the guy the benefit of the doubt unless he’s got a history of something.

The excuse is bullshit but the way the guy did is more probable to be just a joke, watch the guy to see if he does any nazi weird shit and let him work.

  • If anyone’s seen me posting 👌 it’s because my brother sent me this Chaotic Good Barbarian cartoon and there’s a recurring bit where they’re like “So you KNOW it’s GOOD 👌” and i thought it was funny so it lives in my head now

Look, if someone snapped a pic of me and for some reason I happened to be doing this hand gesture, I could easily make a statement of genuine disavowment of Nazi bullshit. Like, “sorry but it was just kind of a nervous tic. There is nothing more pathetic or inimical than racist ideology.”
